Frequently Asked Questions
What does iShare Medical® Messaging do?
iShare Medical® Messaging provides you with the ability to securely exchange medical records, medical data, and messages between trusted individuals regardless of EHR or if the provider has no EHR at all. It’s about getting the right information on the right patient to the right provider at the right time, every time.
Who is a trusted individual?
iShare Medical® ID-Proofs every person before issuing that person an iShareID Direct address and a secret key. The iShareID Direct is an address that uniquely identifies an individual in the health care system. The individual can be a patient or a provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, physical therapist, dentist or staff member of a provider such as a medical assistant, nurse, administrator, scheduler, receptionist, or biller. This means that you will know who is sending and receiving the message. iShare Medical® Messaging can be used to safely and securely send and receive messages to and from medical providers and to and from patients.
Can I exchange data with individuals who don’t have iShare Medical® Messaging?
Yes, as long as the individual has been ID-Proofed by a trusted agent and has a “Direct Address”.
Can I exchange data with providers who don’t use my EHR?
Yes, as long as the provider has been ID-Proofed by a trusted agent and has a “Direct Address”. As a part of the DirectTrust nationwide network, iShare Medical® can exchange data with more than 300 certified EHR systems.
What if I don’t have an EHR system?
You do not have to have an EHR to use iShare Medical® to exchange medical records. You can use iShare Medical® Messaging to exchange records with any individual or provider who has been ID-Proofed by a trusted agent and has a “Direct Address”.

How does iShare Medical® Messaging Work?
iShareID Direct looks like an email address and iShare Medical® Messaging looks like an email system, but this is no email system. Your iShare Medical® messages can only be opened by a trusted individual to whom the message is addressed using their secret key to unlock the message. Messages are sent over a safe and secure encrypted network.
What kind of data content can be exchanged using iShare Medical® Messaging?
Any message or attachment that can be attached to an email can be securely exchanged using iShare Medical® Messaging including Protected Health Information (PHI). Under the HIPAA Privacy Rule, healthcare providers and their business associates must protect the privacy of the patient’s identifiable health information in any format including electronic, paper or oral (verbal).
