iShare Medical Eases Burden of COVID-19 by Automating Reporting for Hospitals

Press Release

Kansas City, Mo., Sept 9, 2020 – iShare Medical, a DirectTrust Accredited Trust Anchor specializing in the trusted sharing of electronic health information, has announced new service making it possible for hospitals, healthcare organizations, and laboratories to streamline reporting of COVID-19 cases through Electronic Case Reporting (eCR).

For many healthcare systems, COVID-19 case reporting involves handwriting case information on a paper form and faxing it to multiple federal, state, and local public health agencies. When these case reports are received by the public health agencies, they are entered into their systems creating even more work. This approach is labor intensive and inefficient.

Now, with the faced with the challenges due to the sheer volume of COVID-19 cases, hospitals and public health agencies are getting overwhelmed. This has led to a break-down in information flow.

iShare Medical has leveraged their existing technology, iShare Medical Messaging to automate and expedite COVID-19 case reporting. Instead of handwriting data that is already in electronic form in the EHR or laboratory system, hospitals, health systems, and laboratories can use iShare Medical Messaging to integrate with their EHR or laboratory system to automate sending the electronic case report (eCR) directly to the proper reporting location including the CDC.

“Reporting COVID cases in large numbers has put a significant strain on our healthcare system,” says Linda Van Horn, Founder of iShare Medical. “In many cases, the reporting process remains far too manual, with many hospitals faxing case reports which then has to be entered into the public health agencies system. Our technology replaces the fax machine and automates electronic case reporting.”

As a Health Information Services Provider (HISP), iShare Medical uses a standard protocol that is compatible with nearly every major electronic health record (EHR). This means that iShare Medical’s technology can securely send r case reports to the CDC, State, and other public health agencies via AIMS – a cloud-based platform that accelerates public health reporting, created jointly by the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL and the CDC). The goal of iShare Medical integration with the AIMS platform to reduce reporting times for infectious diseases such as COVID-19 from weeks to minutes.

Getting the product and processes in place to do real-time electronic COVID-19 reporting is quick and straight-forward with iShare Medical. Through their flagship product, iShare Medical Messaging, can normally set-up an account within three days, and at that point, the hospital or healthcare organization can begin digitally reporting COVID-19 case information.

The Cost of Faxing in Healthcare

What technology from 1843 is still being used daily in healthcare?

Fax communication is still commonplace in healthcare because it allows providers to transfer patient-specific communication to one another at the point of care. However, the amount of coordination that the average provider has to do with various providers, specialists, insurance companies, hospitals, and more, produces a mountain of paper that’s weighing our health system down in more ways than one.

Faxes cost healthcare billions of dollars each year and can lead to medical errors due to missing, incomplete or unreadable information. It’s time to phase out that fax machine and replace it with something better – such as direct secure messaging.

Replace the Fax with iShare Medical Messaging

Learn how iShare Medical Messaging can help you to improve care coordination and reduce cost by replacing the fax machine with direct secure messaging for healthcare.

iShare Medical is a complete medical record, organized around the person, that is easily and securely shared across trusted providers, organizations, software program, devices , and payers and available at your fingertips 24/7/365.

A complete medical record does not exist. The Institute of Medicine book To Err is Human: Building a Safer Medical System states that “When people see healthcare providers in different care settings, none who have access to complete information, it becomes easier for things to go wrong”. Incomplete information can lead to preventable wrong decisions. In fact, in a study done by Johns Hopkins University, they found that preventable medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. behind heart disease and cancer. This is in large part because medical records are stored based on the provider. Each provider has a fragment of information that is not shared with other providers.

When patients and providers have complete information it is amazing what things can be achieved such as saving lives, improving care and outcomes, and reducing the code of healthcare. iShare Medical is a complete medical record, organized around the person that is easily and securely shared across trusted providers, patients, organizations, software programs, devices and payers and available 24/7/365.

Our target markets are patients who need access to their own information, providers who need to share medical records and insurance information with other providers and payers who need access to medical records to provide prior approval for services or to pay a claim.

iShare Medical One of First to Achieve Accreditation for Exchanging Health Information Among 23 Federal Agencies

DirectTrust recently announced the GTAB accreditation of Kansas City-based iShare Medical as a Fully Accredited Governmental Trust Anchor.

iShare Medical is now uniquely qualified to provide trusted exchange of medical records with 23 Federal government agencies, including Medicare, Medicaid, Indian Health Services, and the Veterans Administration.

Linda Van Horn, MBA“This achievement for iShare Medical is the result of many months of software development and compliance with rigorous privacy, security and trust compliance, including the implementation of a hardware security module that provides both hardware and software encryption protection,” said Linda Van Horn, President / CEO of iShare Medical. “It opens up a big market for iShare Medical, as Federal government agencies account for more than 50% of the health care expenditures in the U.S.”

iShare Medical is one of only three companies who have achieved this GTAB accreditation. (See https://services.directtrust.org/gtab/)

Federal Health ArchitectureThe DirectTrust Governmental Trust Anchor Bundle (“GTAB”) facilitates interoperability (the ability to exchange medical records and use the information that has been exchanged) between governmental agencies and private sector health care providers. DirectTrust created a special Governmental Trust Anchor Bundle to meet the more rigorous regulatory requirements of federal agencies, after more than a year of meetings between DirectTrust and the Veteran’s Administration, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Federal Health Architecture (a government agency that defines technical standards for exchanging medical data see https://www.healthit.gov/policy-researchers-implementers/federal-partners). All participants in the bundle must successfully achieve GTAB accreditation status, meet all requirements of the Accredited Trust Anchor Bundle Standard Operating Procedures, and meet the set of profile requirements described by the GTAB’s standard operating procedure, including adherence with the Federal Health Architecture and cross-certification by the Federal Bridge Certificate Authority.

iShare Medical’s accreditation as a DirectTrust Governmental Trust Anchor helps to make significant progress toward moving the vision of interoperable health information technology into reality, so that information can be exchanged securely, accurately and efficiently.

DirectTrust GTAB accreditationDirectTrust is a national, non-profit association whose flagship Accredited Trust Anchor Bundle (ATAB) currently serves more than 71,000 healthcare organizations with more than 1.3 million Direct addresses. To learn more, go to www.directtrust.org.

What is Interoperability and Why Should You Care? (Part 2)

what is interoperabilityInteroperability is one of the hottest topics in the health care industry right now. But what does it have to do with you, the provider?

In Part 1 of our series on interoperability, we explained how interoperability can help practices take the next step in electronic health records exchange, and ultimately help improve care and outcomes, and reduce costs.

The official definition from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC):

Interoperable [in-ter-op-er-uh-buhl]
NounThe ability of a system to exchange electronic health information and use electronic health information from other systems without special effort on the part of the user.

Boiled down, it’s the capability for different electronic health records (EHR’s) or computer systems to communicate.

Just like with geographical boundaries, language barriers have existed in the health care world. iShare Medical has created solutions, so that computer systems between organizations and practices can communicate electronically.

A new day is dawning and providers see the vision of the possibilities of improving care by sharing medical records. Imagine being able to easily respond to patient records requests, without worry about HIPPA violations or long waits or erroneous fax sends or laborious re-entry of data points.

Imagine a smooth system of sharing and exchanging electronic health information between different doctors, labs, specialists, departments or health care systems. Imagine being able to immediately review a patient’s history, or lab report, or consult with another provider all within the protection of a highly secure, protected email-like tool.

Interoperability facilitates that. Now at iShare Medical.

What is Interoperability and Why Should You Care? (Part 1)

interoperability-part-1Take the next step in information exchange

The biggest change happening in healthcare right now is interoperability. Here’s what it means, and why it’s important to you as a provider.

Medical practices have invested significant resources in converting paper records into electronic health records in recent years. Many have experienced the benefits to tracking costs and billing for services. But there is more that electronic health records can do for patients and practices.

All that electronically-stored information is valuable to all aspects of care. The next step for maximizing that investment and continuing to improve processes is secure, efficient healthcare information exchange. But lack of interoperability poses a problem.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) defines interoperability this way:

Interoperable [in-ter-op-er-uh-buhl]
Noun

The ability of a system to exchange electronic health information and use electronic health information from other systems without special effort on the part of the user.

Boiled down, it’s the capability for different computer systems to communicate. And right now, as you well know, many doctors and healthcare providers’ systems can’t. They are NOT interoperable.

So, many providers are still faxing information and wasting staff time on sending, receiving, and chasing paper! This inefficiency is a key driver for the move to interoperability.

We’re on the cusp of the change in how all this works. It’s happening fast. Solutions are already available from iShare Medical for secure electronic messaging, seamless integration into your EHR, and the interoperability between health care practices’ information systems.

Find out what your peers already know, interoperability is easy when you have the right tools! iShare Medical’s nationwide network spans 58,000 healthcare organizations, 1.2 million Direct addresses, and supports more than 50 HIE’s.
